Welcome to Murrysville

Murrysville, PA was first settled as early as 1788, however Jeremiah Murry, who purchased several hundred acres, officially founded the town in 1820.

The area is located approximately 20 miles east of Pittsburgh and sits along the western edge of Westmoreland County. In 2007, city-data.com reports that Murrysville had a population of 18,495. The median household income in 2008 was $81,096, placing the municipality above the state average. The median home value was $225,198, also above the state average.

Murrysville is about 50% developed, with densely populated areas along the Route 22 corridor. While primarily a suburban community, Murrysville still retains a significant amount of open, rural land. Overall the area is considered to have a low population density. The municipality covers an area of 37 square miles and shares borders with eight other communities and surrounds the Borough of Export.

The average household size in Murrysville was 2.6 people. The majority (79.5%) of households are considered family households with an average size of 3.0 people. The median age is 43 years.

Murrysville boasts a large number of parks that include sports fields, playgrounds, dog parks, hiking, biking and walking trails, community parks and extensive natural areas. There is also a community Senior and Community Center.

The primary shopping and retail area in Murrysville is along the Route 22 corridor which stretches from the border of Monroeville to Delmont. Reconstruction on Route 22 was completed over the last several years resulting in improved transportation in the municipality. This has been accompanied by new retail development along the corridor, with more slated for the future. Murrysville is 6 miles from Monroeville and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, 20 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh and 15 miles from Greensburg.

Franklin Regional School District serves Murrysville, Export and parts of Delmont. The district operates five schools: three elementary schools, the Franklin Regional Middle School, and the Franklin Regional High School.

Murrysville's claims to fame are the Haymaker Gas Well, the nation's first commercial natural gas well and the Murrysville Tree Sign which spells out the word Murrysville. The trees were landscaped to grow and form the letters by local Boy Scouts in 1933. In 1947, the sign was featured in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" as the world's largest arboreal sign.
